In the 1880s, Texas land investor Walker Fore (d. 1890) built a twenty-seven-room hotel at Chalybeate Springs in Wood County that operated until 1895. Fore died at his home in Upshur County but was buried in Dallas by the city's Masonic fraternity. His daughter Sue Catherine Fore (1852-1900) married attorney and reverend Henry Augustus "Gus" Garrison (1848-1923), with whom she had five children.

Comprising land records, correspondence, financial records, legal records, ephemera, slave records, livestock records, and notes, the Walker Fore Papers, 1845-1920, document the property and life of Fore and his family. Primarily composed of East Texas land grants and deeds held by Fore and others, records also contain court documents, wills, and contracts relating to property ownership. Accounts, receipts, slave and livestock records, and notes concern to the investments and business ventures of Fore, while insurance papers and correspondence of his son-in-law Gus Garrison pertain to personal affairs and the Methodist Episcopal Church in Texas. Additionally, printed material includes blank forms, pamphlets, and advertisements.
