			<p>A resident of the New York City and East Chatham, New York, writer Carl Bakal  (1918-2004) authored several books on a number of topics, such as the right to own firearms in the United States and charities.  His publications include <emph render="italic">How to Shoot for Glamour</emph> (1955), <emph render="italic">The Right to Bear Arms </emph> (1966), and <emph render="italic">Charity U.S.A: An Investigation into the Hidden World of the Multi-billion dollar charity industry</emph> (1979).</p>

			<p>Composed of correspondence, drafts of manuscripts, newspaper clippings, articles, printed material, press releases, a galley proof, and photographs, the Carl Bakal Papers, 1933-1972, document Bakal’s research and writing process for <emph render="italic">The Right to Bear Arms</emph>. Correspondence concerns his research, primarily Bakal’s requests for information, and publicity for his book, while newspaper clippings and articles pertain to a variety of topics, such as race riots, homicide, kidnappings, shootings, suicides, federal gun control laws, the international arms traffic, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and other social and political issues. Printed material consist of government reports on federal legislation and senate bills, press releases issued by the McGraw-Hill Book Company highlight Bakal’s <emph render="italic">The Right to Bear Arms</emph>, and drafts of manuscripts illustrate different versions of the manuscript prior to its publication. Additionally, the collection contains a galley proof of <emph render="italic">he Right to Bear Arms</emph>, and photographs depicting individuals associated with his research.</p>
