Biographical NoteThomas Shelton Sutherland (1820-1900) was born to George Sutherland and Fanny (Menefee) Sutherland in Limestone County, Alabama. He married Elizabeth Hodges in 1848 and resided in Edna, Jackson County, Texas. His brother, William Sutherland defended the Alamo during the siege in 1836. Born in Salado, Texas, his son Thomas Shelton Sutherland II (1861-1923) married Laura Rogers in 1895. Scope and ContentsLetters, printed material, and a family bible compose the Thomas S. Sutherland Family Papers, [ca.1840s, 1897-1908], documenting the history of the Sutherland family in Texas. Letters with transcripts (1898-1908) from Laura Rogers Sutherland to Laurie Bell Sutherland Dickson Faires describe the daily activities and health of the Sutherland family in Edna, Texas. Other printed material includes photocopies of Sutherland family records, such as birth and death notices, and an order form for a bronze memorial statue (ca. 1880s).
