			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>A professor of economics, John Stricklin Spratt, Sr. (1902-1976) taught at San Angelo Junior College (now Angelo State University) and Southern Methodist University.  He also authored several books on economic history, such as <emph render="italic">The Niagara Falls Conference of 1914: Its Causes and Results</emph> (1928), <emph render="italic">The Road to Spindletop: Economic Change in Texas, 1875-1901</emph> (1955), and <emph render="italic">Thurber, Texas: The Life and Death of a Company Coal Town</emph> (1986).</p>

			<head>Scope and Contents</head>
			<p>Composed of correspondence, financial records, unpublished manuscripts, newspaper clippings, printed material, a galley proof, and photographs, the Dr. John S. Spratt, Sr. Papers, [ca.1930]-1983, document Spratt’s research and family history. Correspondence concerns Spratt’s publications and invitations to lecture at various universities, while financial records consist of receipts for purchases and the payment of taxes as well as bank deposit forms. Unpublished manuscripts include several copies of <emph render="italic">Thurber, Texas, The Niagara Falls Conference of 1914</emph>, and a galley proof of <emph render="italic">History of Humble Oil and Refining Company</emph> written by Henrietta M. Larson and Kenneth Wiggins Porter (1959). Additionally, the collection contains newspaper clippings about Spratt as well as historical and economic issues in Mingus and Thurber, Texas; printed material such as issues of <emph render="italic">Textile History Review</emph> and the <emph render="italic">Southwest Review</emph>; and photographs depicting members of the Spratt and Felts family.</p>
