Hugh R. Sutherland, son of Hugh Ross Sutherland and Mary Augusta McCraw of Corpus Christi, Texas, was a county judge for Nueces County, Texas.

Scope and Contents

Comprising of correspondence, the Hugh R. Sutherland Letters, 1903, 1917, 1932-1934, document Sutherland’s judicial and political career. A letter from President Woodrow Wilson to Sutherland (1917) relates to Sutherland’s role on the Draft Board. Two letters to Sutherland from John Nance Garner (1903, 1932) shed light on their friendship. James Farley’s letter to Sutherland (1934) offers appreciation for Sutherland’s assistance to the Democratic National Committee. A 1933 letter from President Franklin Roosevelt responds to Sutherland’s application for an appointment.
