Biographical Note

The son of Schleicher County, Texas, rancher and oilman Cecil Meador and Williwood Bridwell Meador, Joel Tom Meador (1943-1986) was a Boy Scout during his childhood. A speleo-historian and avid collector of cave history, Meador was named a National Speleological Society Fellow in 1969.

Scope and Contents

Comprising research files, color slides, a hotel register, and Boy Scout paraphernalia the J. Tom Meador Papers, [ca. 1957-1970], document Meador's life and his research on caves and Schleicher County, Texas. Classified research files include notes, printed material, photographs, and land deeds related to caves in Texas and Mexico as well as Schleicher County sites, including El Dorado and Fort McKavett. Approximately 750 color slides illustrate trips to caves in Texas and Mexico, as well as caving-related events. Additionally, the collection includes Boy Scout patches and insignia (1960-1968) and the register for the Eldorado Hotel (1959-1963).
