Historical Note
Run by the Peter family, the Market Produce Company was a wholesale grocer located in La Grange, Texas, from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth. The Peter family also invested in land.
Scope and Contents
Comprised of business and legal records as well as correspondence, the Market Produce (La Grange, Texas) Records, 1849, 1867-1955, chronicle the history of one business over a century. Receipts, payment records, checks, promissory notes, and lines record business activity. Prominent in the collection are weekly time books and banking deposit slips from the 1950s. Additionally, numerous land deeds and official records document Peter family land transactions around La Grange. Correspondence between family members discusses almost exclusively business matters, particularly insurance.
