Biographical Note
Born in Sulpher Springs, Texas, Gerald C. Mann (1907-1990) attended Southern Methodist University, where he was an All-American quarterback and class president in 1927. While earning a law degree from Harvard University, he also worked in a factory and as a Methodist minister to support his family with wife Anna Mary Mann. Returning to Texas, he opened the Dallas law firm Mann & Mann with his brother, where he worked until being appointed Texas Secretary of State in 1935. In 1939, Mann became the state's Attorney General, a position he held until 1944. After an unsuccessful run for Senate against Lyndon B. Johnson in 1941 and the end of his second term as Attorney General, Mann retired from politics to his Dallas law practice though he remained an active Democrat. In 1960, he served as director of the Kennedy-Johnson presidential ticket's Texas campaign. For his athletic accomplishments, Mann is an inductee of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
Scope and Contents
Comprised of scrapbooks, photographs and negatives, correspondence, a diary, speeches, and a pamphlet, the Gerald C. Mann Papers, 1929-1968, document Mann's life and career as a Texas lawyer and politician. A diary chronicles a 1937 to 1938 campaign trip to West Texas with James D. Smullen, while scrapbooks on microfilm chronicle Mann's personal and professional activities. Correspondence relates to Mann's professional achievements and activities, while a pamphlet promotes his bid for Texas Attorney General. One speech by Mann supports the same campaign in Mann's boyhood home of Hopkins County, while the other, by John Connally to Texas Democrats, endorses Lyndon B. Johnson's bid for president. Additionally, 36 black and white photographs with copy negatives show Mann and his family, his meetings with state and national politicians, his inaugurations, and his political campaigns.
