Oakland, California native Carleton W. Kendall was stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio during World War I. Kendall was engaged briefly to Joan London (1901-1971), the daughter of author Jack London (1876-1916).

Comprised of correspondence to his fiancée Joan London and his family, the Carleton W. Kendall Papers, 1917-1918, chronicle Kendall’s experiences at Kelly Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, during World War I. Kendall describes conditions on the base as well as his training as an airplane mechanic and other duties.
