Biographical Note

Born in Mazraat el-Toufah, Lebanon (formerly Syria), Elias B. Karam (1887-1979) immigrated to the United States in 1913, ultimately settling in San Antonio, Texas.

Scope and Contents

Comprised of handwritten reminiscences, printed material, and photographs, the Elias B. Karam Family Papers, [ca. 1900-1992], document Karam’s experiences growing up in Syria and Lebanon, his emigration to San Antonio, Texas, as well as his thoughts on Syrian and Lebanese political issues and international affairs. Written entirely in Arabic, the reminiscences contain thoughts, musings, commentary, and poetry describing Karam’s views on politics, religion, and family life. Printed material consist of books written in Arabic, French, and English published in the early 1900s, including several copies of the Holy Qur’an as well as literature and histories of Syria and Lebanon, while photographs depict Mazraat el-Toufah, Lebanon.
