Biographical Note

A graduate student in the Department of History at the University of North Texas, W. Daniel Hancock wrote his master’s thesis, entitled "The Congressional and Political Career of John Hancock 1865-1885" (1996). Before being elected to the Texas Legislature in 1860, John Hancock (1824-1893) practiced law in Austin, Texas, and served as district judge of the Second Judicial District.

Scope and Contents

Composed of photocopies of correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, and a diary, the W. Daniel Hancock Collection, 1995-1996, documents Hancock’s research on Texas legislator John Hancock for his master’s thesis. Correspondence concerns John Hancock’s business affairs and political career, especially during and after the Civil War, while his diary describes the political climate in Texas from 1864 and 1865, among other matters. Additionally, newspaper clippings and articles contain articles on John Hancock’s career as a judge and congressman.
