Biographical Note

Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, Joanne Steed (1927-1998) was the daughter of Clarence Carter Steed and Winnie Bracewell. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 1950, Joanne worked as a teacher in California and Texas as well as abroad in such countries as Japan, Turkey, Germany, and Italy as an employee for the United States Department of Defense. In 1972, she married Tom Guinn, an oil-field equipment salesman, and the couple settled in El Paso, Texas. Her husband’s work required that they travel internationally as well as host a variety of foreign guests.
