Biographical Note
After receiving his Ph.D. from Yale in 1966, Lewis Ludlow Gould taught history at the University of Texas at Austin until his retirement in 1998. Gould has written and edited numerous articles and books on politics and the American presidency, including
The Black Experience in America (1968) and American First Ladies (2001).
Scope and Contents
Collected by historian Lewis L. Gould, letters, ephemera, legal documents and other papers comprise the Lewis L. Gould Collection of American Political History, 1870-1920, documenting American Gilded Age and Progressive Era politics. The collection includes the papers of New York Democratic politician Smith Weed, primarily concerning to the 1888 presidential campaign and his friendship with Grover Cleveland; documents related to Congressman William Sulzer and the House Foreign Relations Committee of the 1910s; papers about Washington State reformer Lincoln Davis; letters from members of Congress relating to pension issues after World War I; and letters of Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. The collection also contains individual letters from and to such politicians as George B. Cortelyou, Mark Hanna, John Hay, Henry Cabot Lodge, Samuel J. Randall, Elihu Root, and numerous others. Pamphlets discuss the protective tariff and the silver issue, while an 1898 stereogram depicts President William McKinley at his White House desk. Additional documents concern Edwin Aldrich, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and William H. Taft.
