A Guide to the Douglass K. Daniel Papers, 1977-1996
Biographical NoteWriter and editor Douglass K. Daniel worked for the Associated Press in Washington, D.C., and taught reporting at Kansas State University and Ohio University. Additionally, he authored several books, including Harry Reasoner: A Life in the News (2007) and Lou Grant: The Making of TV’s Top Newspaper Drama (1996), which discusses the television program’s development and censorship issues. Daniel Papers, 1977-1996, document Daniel’s research and writing process for his book, Lou Grant: The Making of TV’s Top Newspaper Drama. Correspondence concerns research on the television program and legal permissions for the publication, while notes pertain to interviews with various media personnel and sketches of characters on the show. Photocopies of magazine and newspaper clippings contain articles on individuals associated with the show’s production, including one of its creators Gene Reynolds and actor Edward Asner; articles on controversies surrounding the show and censorship of television programs; and reviews of the show itself. Additionally, the collection contains videocassette tapes of episodes of Lou Grant, audiocassette tapes of interviews with actors, writers, and producers, a copy of the book, and photographs depicting Daniel and Asner.
