Biographical Note

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John Roche Butler (b. ca. 1795), a veteran of the War of 1812, worked as a sea captain stationed in Point Isabel (now Port Isabel), Texas. Following Butler’s appointment as Harbor Master for the Second Municipality of New Orleans in 1840, he served in the Mexican War, commanding a ship under General Winfield Scott. Butler married Pauline Victoire Lebau, a native of Paris, France, with whom he had at least four daughters: Josephine, Pauline, Mary, and Emma. Emma married Joseph Kleiber, an entrepreneur and railroad developer. The couple had five children and initially settled in Brownsville, Texas, before relocating to Matamoros, Tamaulipas.
