Biographical Note

A native of East Austin, Texas, June H. Brewer (1925-2010) was one of the first African-American women to apply and be admitted to the graduate school at University of Texas at Austin in 1950. Having received her bachelor’s degree from Tillotson College (now Huston-Tillotson University) and her master’s degree in English from Howard University, Brewer attained her PhD from UT Austin in 1963. In addition to teaching English at Huston-Tillotson for 35 years as the first endowed professor, she was also the chair of the English department and the founder of the non-profit organization, Borders Learning Community, which sought to rectify the racial achievement gap in standardized testing. Brewer researched African-American women writers, receiving numerous awards for her scholarship and community service, such as the National Women of Achievement Connie Yerwood and the NOKOA Outstanding Educator awards.
