Biographical Note

A native of Indiana, Charles A. Zilker moved to Austin, Texas, in 1880. Shortly after his arrival, Zilker relocated to San Antonio, where he worked as an ice manufacturer. In 1882, he moved with his brother, Andrew J. Zilker, to Brownsville, where they managed a Boyle ammonia-compression machine at an ice plant owned by entrepreneur Richard King. After returning to Austin in 1884, Zilker founded ice plants in both Austin and San Antonio, which he later sold in 1928 for $1 million.
