A Guide to the Mary Elizabeth Youens Papers, 1932
Biographical NoteBorn in Columbus, Texas, Mary Elizabeth Youens (1913-1990) was the daughter of Willis George Youens and Fay Burford. After graduating from Columbus High School in 1930, Youens attended the University of Texas at Austin from 1930 through 1932, where she studied Home Economics. Shortly after her graduation, she married Earl Kenneth Brune, with whom she had two children. In 1938, Youens began working for the Colorado County School Superintendent. After divorcing her husband in 1940, she became chief clerk of the Colorado County Ration Board until opening the Columbus Drugstore in 1944. Youens sold her drugstore two years later and married James G. Hopkins of Garwood. The couple had two children and operated the Garwood Rice Sales Company. In addition to her entrepreneurial endeavors, Youens was actively engaged in her community, chairing the Colorado County Historical Commission as well as serving as a member of the John Everitt Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsComposed of a scrapbook, sketches, and printed material, the Mary Elizabeth Youens Papers, 1932, document Youens’ interest in art, architecture, fashion. The scrapbook from Youen’s Home Economics course at the University of Texas contains her sketches of architecture and interiors of houses as well as magazine clippings pertaining to interior decorating and historical architectural design, while pencil and watercolor sketches depict women’s fashions.
