Born in Hong Kong in 1927, Wendell Wilcox lived in the United States, China, and the Philippines as a child. At the start of World War II, Wilcox resided in the city of Manila with his mother, father, and grandmother. In July 1944, he and his father were detained in a Japanese prison camp in Los Baños. They were rescued by American paratroopers in February 1945.
Comprised of a typescript, the Wendell Wilcox Diary, 1944-1945, documents Wilcox’s experiences in a Japanese prison camp in Los Baños, Philippines, during World War II. The diary describes the treatment of prisoners, including the hardships Wilcox and his father endured, American air raids, and food shortages in the prison.
