A Guide to the Robert John Walker Letter, 1845
Biographical NoteBorn in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, Robert James Walker (1801-1869) graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1819. Following his graduation, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1821, and moved to Natchez, Mississippi, in 1826. From 1835 to 1845, Walker served as a U.S. Senator from Mississippi and subsequently was appointed Secretary of Treasury by President James K. Polk from 1845 through 1849. After resuming his law practice, Walker was elected Governor of the Kansas Territory in 1857, though serving only for a few months. Additionally, Walker was the United States financial agent to Europe between 1863 and 1864, again returning to his law practice until his death in 1869. Source: "Walker, Robert John., (1801-1869)."
