A Guide to the Jerry D. Thompson Papers, 1968-2015
A professor of history at Texas A&M International University, Jerry D. Thompson received his bachelor’s degree from Western New Mexico University in 1964, his master’s from the University of New Mexico in 1968, and his doctor of arts degree in history from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1982. Thompson researches and writes on the American Civil War as well as the history of Texas and the Southwest. A prolific writer, he has authored numerous books and articles on historical subjects, including Warm Weather and Bad Whiskey: The 1886 Laredo Election Riot (1991), A Wild and Vivid Land: An Illustrated History of the South Texas Border (1997), Civil War and Revolution on Rio Grande Frontier: A Narrative and Photographic History (2004), and A Civil War History of the New Mexico Volunteers and Militia (2015). He was named TAMIU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2002.

Comprised of correspondence, legal documents, newspaper clippings, certificates, printed items, and photographs, the Jerry D. Thompson Papers, 1968-2015, chronicle Thompson’s research and career as an historian and professor at Texas A&M International University. Correspondence primarily consists of letters from acquaintances in the historical community, especially those at historical societies, such as the Texas State Historical Association and the Arizona Historical Society, as well as from various university presses concerning his publications. Legal documents include book contracts, while certificates from the Texas Historical Commission award Thompson for this distinguished service. Newspaper clippings, such as articles on the publications of his books on Texas and Southwestern history and historical sites in Texas pertain to Thompson’s research. Additionally, printed items consist of posters from political and historical events, and photographs depict Thompson teaching and at various conferences.
