Biographical Note

In accomplice with his brothers Tommie and Luther Bell and another man named John Miller, Foster Bell murdered father and son Ernest and Robert Schaffner near Sealy, Texas, on September 5, 1922. During Bell’s trial which commenced on April 2, 1923, he was represented by J. E. Edmondson, W. T. Hill, Charles R. Johnson, and Dave J. Pickle, while Fred Blundell, Dan Moody, T. H. Gregor, and John E. Shelton represented the State of Texas.

Scope and Contents

Composed of a stenographer’s report, the Texas versus Foster Bell Minutes, 1923, document the trial of Foster Bell for the murder of Ernest and Robert Schaffner. Presided over by Judge James R. Hamilton of the Criminal District Court of Travis County, Texas, in April 1923, the report contains testimony of witnesses, such as Leon Hackbarth and Mary Kanak, among others, as well as a certification from the stenographer, J. W. Dibrell.
