Historical Note

During the Civil War, the Texas Second Volunteer Cavalry Regiment was a United States Army unit formed in late 1863 at Brownsville. The men for the Federal regiment came largely from Mexican, German and Irish populations. In December 1863, the regiment began service at Brownsville before moving to New Orleans in August 1864. In November the First and Second Regiments were merged into the First Texas Volunteer Cavalry and performed reconnaissance in Louisiana until the end of the war.
