A Guide to the Texas Folklife Festival Collection, 1982-1994

Historical Note

Organized by the Institute of Texas Cultures, the first annual Texas Folklife Festival was held in 1972 and modeled after the Smithsonian’s National Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. The festival showcases ethnic traditions and pioneer skills, including foods, music, crafts, and dance of over 40 cultures in Texas, including British, Japanese, Jamaican, Wendish, Lebanese, and Colombian groups.

Scope and Contents

The Texas Folklife Festival Collection, 1982-1994, comprises press packets for the annual Texas Folklife Festival of the Institute of Texas Cultures in San Antonio, Texas. Each packet includes press releases, photographs, fact sheets and historical information, copies of the festival’s logo, contact information, maps, brochures, and programs, which discuss the represented cultures and participating organizations at the event. Additionally, the collection contains an internal report about the activities and history of the festival.
