Biographical NoteBorn in Nashville, Tennessee, Jules Henri Tallichet (1877-1937) was known as the “dean of Texas railroad lawyers.” He served as the attorney for the Southern Pacific railroad and served as the director for several railways. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe Jules Henri Tallichet Essay, 1927, consists of “In Defense of Zebulon Montgomery Pike,” written in response to a “scurrilous” article in Scribner’s Magazine entitled “Zeb Pike” by Kyle S. Crichton. Crichton argued that Pike and his expedition were cogs in Aaron Burr’s conspiracy to create an independent nation in the Southwest United States. Tallichet’s essay goes into great detail about the Pike Expedition and its travels through the south and west of the Louisiana Purchase as well as Pike’s later military service during the War of 1812, all in an attempt to rebuff the claims made by Crichton.
