Biographical Note

Born in Virginia, William Carter Stubbs (1846-1924) fought in the Civil War before graduating from the University of Virginia in 1867. He served as professor of chemistry at Alabama A&M University (1872-1885) and as director of the Louisiana Sugar Experiment Station in New Orleans (1885-1905). Furthermore, Stubbs published numerous books and articles, including Cultivation of Sugar Cane (1901).

Scope and Contents

Primarily comprised of correspondence, the William Carter Stubbs Papers, 1899-1911, document Stubbs’ agricultural activities at the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, the Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Texas-Louisiana Sugar Company of Texas. Letters discuss the establishment of an experimental cowpea farm in Antigua, Stubbs’ writing and publishing ventures in the area of agricultural research, investment management performed by Stubbs for E. G. Clarke, and an irrigation and development enterprise of the Texas-Louisiana Sugar Company of Texas near McAllen, Texas. Additionally, the collection contains a memorandum of agreement between Stubbs and MacMillan & Co. to publish his book, Cultivation of Sugar Cane; a newspaper clipping pertaining to the Texas-Louisiana Sugar Company of Texas; and a brief handwritten biographical note about Stubbs.
