Historical Note

The Strawn Coal Mining Company operated coalmines in Strawn, Texas, during the early
to mid-20th century. After purchasing the town’s Mount Marian coal shaft from the
Johnson Brothers in 1903, the company acquired another mine at Lyre in 1914. The two
mines produced over one and a half million tons of coal between 1910 and 1920, but
when the railroads switched from coal power to diesel, production dropped and by
 1946 the Strawn mine closed.
