Scope and Contents

Composed of seven volumes of typescripts and Photostats of narratives and a report, the Spanish Missions in Texas and California Collection, 1691-1825, documents the activities of various Spanish missions in Texas and California between the 17th and 19th centuries. Missions represented in the volumes include Nuestra Señora de los Delores de la Punta, Nuestra Señora del Refugio, San Antonio de Valero, San Sabá, San Francisco Xavier, and San Juan Capistrano. The narratives shed light on Spanish relations with Native American tribes, such as the Apache, as well as religious and military activities, while also providing biographical sketches of missionaries, such as Alonso Giraldo de Terreros and Francisco Garcés. A report penned by Miguel Sevillaro de Pardes chronicles his experiences as well as economic and social conditions at the Mission Nuestra Señora de los Delores de la Punta.
