			<p>John Franklin Smith and his sister Mary operated a ranch in Texas, traveling to
				Mexico to trade livestock and to Mississippi and Louisiana to visit family in 1859.
				During the Civil War, John served in the Confederate Army, residing in Galveston,
				Texas, near the end of the war. </p>

			<p>Comprising three bound copies of transcribed correspondence, the John Franklin Smith
				Letters, 1859-1865, 1884, contains missives from Smith, his sister Mary, and others
				to the Smiths’ cousins in the Rowzee and Pickle families. The authors describe life
				as ranchers in Texas (1859, 1884); a trip to visit the Rowzees and other family in
				Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana (1859); and events during the Civil War, including
				Mary’s home life in Texas and John and other relatives’ military activities as
				Confederate soldiers in Galveston, Texas, and Manassas Junction, Virginia
				(1861-1865). </p>
