Historical Note

One of the oldest law enforcement associations in the United States, the Sheriff’s Association of Texas was established on August 14, 1874, in Corsicana, Texas. Organized by soldier, politician, and university president for the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University) Lawrence Sullivan (Sul) Ross (1838-1898), the association began annual training sessions in 1878, which are today the largest gathering of law enforcement professionals in Texas.

Scope and Contents

Comprised of correspondence, speeches, bylaws, minutes, rosters, and financial papers, the Sheriff’s Association of Texas Records, 1876-1907, document the association’s activities shortly after it’s founding. Correspondence consists of two letters written by John P. Kirk, secretary and treasurer of the association, which concerns the Anti-Free Pass Act and the amendment of article 1054 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Drafts of a speech delivered at the annual meeting in Galveston in 1895, minutes, and several versions of bylaws pertain to the development of the association, while rosters list members, and financial documents, such a record book of checks, document the association’s financial activities.
