Born in Austin, Texas, Rossi Lucian Selvaggi (1927-2008) enlisted in the U.S. Navy for three years before graduating from the Officer Candidate School in 1949. During the Vietnam War, he developed a training program for Southeast Asian officers at Air University. In 1958, Selvaggi received a Master’s in history from the University of Texas at Austin after completing his thesis, A History of Randolph Air Base. Following his retirement from the military in 1978, he worked at Texas Instruments, then the University of Texas at Austin Industrial Education Department.

The Rossi L. Selvaggi Papers, 1958, comprise research materials, including correspondence and photographs, used by Selvaggi to write his 1958 thesis on Randolph Air Base. The correspondence is primarily typed letters between Selvaggi and the aircraft companies that produced aircrafts used at Randolph Air Base, including Boeing Airplane Company and North American Aviation. The letters are arranged in different folders according to company and include photographs of the companies’ planes. Another folder labeled “Personal anecdotes” contains several photographs of Randolph Field and correspondence between Selvaggi and people who were previously stationed at Randolph Air Base.
