Biographical Note

John W. "Jack" Rush, Jr., of Perry, Illinois, served in the U.S. Army’s 73rd Illinois Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Returning to Perry after the war, Rush married Anna Morrison in 1867. He operated a farm and ranch, where the Rushes raised several children. He traveled all over the United States, buying and selling supplies and land.

Scope and Contents

Composed of correspondence, legal documents, financial records, newspaper clippings, diary entries, and printed materials, the John W. Rush Papers, 1862-1922, documents the business and military career of Rush. Primarily containing correspondence, the collection chronicles Rush’s service in the Union Army during the Civil War, his courtship and marriage with Anna Morrison, as well as his and his family’s farming and trade activities in Illinois, Texas, and other states. Legal documents consist of an 1873 warranty deed, an 1873 indenture, and several legislative bills, 1914-1915, regarding Allan C. Rush’s commission to build a suspension bridge over the Golden Gate strait in San Francisco Bay. Diary entries, 1867-[ca. 1903], and financial records, 1889-1903, comprising an account book, receipts, and bills, document Rush’s trips around the United States and his business activities. Newspaper clippings, 1899-1918, and printed materials, 1888-1916, include stories, prayers, and current affairs articles. Additionally, the collection contains poetry and calling cards.
