Scope and Contents

Comprised of correspondence, printed material, legal and financial documents, a diary, a poem, and a memorandum book, the Richard Lincoln Preece Papers, 1859-1919, document Preece’s experiences as a soldier serving in the Civil War and as a rancher following the war. Correspondence concerns familial affairs and the ranching business (1882-1919), while a diary discusses Preece’s experiences as a Texas Ranger (1865-1867). Legal and financial papers relate to the payment of taxes and the sale of land in Travis County, as well as a certificate of discharge from the Texas Mounted Rangers (1861-1904). The collection also includes an account book detailing Preece’s expenses (1863-1867), a poem written by Preece (1860), and advertisements for spiritual and medical cures (undated).
