Biographical Note

Born in Scotland, attorney Andrew Neill (1813-1883) studied law in Willsburg, West
Virginia. After a serving as a probate judge in Mississippi, he moved to Texas in
1836. As a captain in the Texas Army during the Republic of Texas, Neill
participated in an 1842 expedition against Rafael Vásquez and was later
captured by General Adrián Woll and taken to Mexico. Neill escaped, returning
to Texas by the next January, and married Agnes Nancy Brown in 1844. During the
Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army as a lieutenant colonel under W.P. Lane
in the 2nd Texas Cavalry, better known as the First Texas Partisan Rangers, and in
Company B of the 9th Texas Infantry, better known as the Galveston Guards. Agnes
died in 1867, and the next year Neill married Virginia Wright Chapman, with whom he
had two children. The family later moved to Austin, where they inhabited the
Neill-Cochran House, now a museum.
