Biographical Note

Harry Bowman Moses (1898-1974), from Burnet County, Texas, and the son of lawyer and
Burnet County District Attorney Dayton Moses, enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps in 1917
while a student at Texas A&M College. Attending the First Officers Training Camp
at Camp Bullis in Leon Springs, Texas, Moses received ground training in Austin,
Texas and flight training in Italy and France. He completed his training in November
1918, two days after the end of World War I, and remained in the Air Corps and
served at Kelly Field in San Antonio before resigning in June 1920.

Dayton Moses (1873-1943), from Burnet County, Texas, was a lawyer and District

Scope and Contents

Comprising personal letters to and from his family and photographs taken of Europe
during World War I, the Harry Bowman Moses Papers, 1893-1947, document Moses’
experiences at the onset of American involvement in the war, through Air Corps
training camp, and flight training in Italy and France. Moses’ letters (1917-1920)
detail his experiences of flying, receiving his “pilot’s wings”, and the armistice
in November 1918. In letters (1944-1947) written by Moses to University of Texas
librarian E. W. Winkler, Moses provides background information on his letters and
photographs. Additionally, the collection includes the personal and legal papers
(1914-1938) of Dayton Moses, including court documents and newspaper articles
concerning the removal of Thomas Hickman from the Texas Rangers after a dispute with
Governor James Allred in 1935.
