Biographical Note

Chartered by the Grand Lodge of Louisiana in 1835, Holland Lodge No. 1 of Brazoria,
Texas, was the first Masonic lodge in Texas. The Milam Lodge No. 2 at Nacogdoches
and the McFarland Lodge No. 3 at San Augustine followed two years later. In 1838,
the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas A.F. and A.M. was formed and spurred the
creation of the St. John’s Lodge No. 5, the Harmony Lodge No. 6, the Austin Lodge
No. 12, the Constantine Lodge No. 13, and the Redland Lodge No. 24.
