			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>Antonio María Martínez (d. 1823) was born in Andujar, Spain, and served in the
				Spanish Army before becoming the last governor of Spanish Texas in 1817. He
				surrendered to Agustin De Iturbide, emperor of the newly independent state of
				Mexico, in 1822. Martínez died a year later in Mexico City. </p>

			<p>The Antonio María Martínez Letters, 1817-1819, document Martínez‘s administration of
				Spanish military forces in Texas. Martínez’s letters chronicle his attempts to
				maintain troop morale and the control of military garrisons against the real and
				perceived threats of Mexican rebels, Native Americans, and the United States.</p>
