			<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>The Martin family resided in San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and Houston, Texas. Their
roots in Texas have been traced back to Jose de la Baume. Born in France, Baume
served in both the French and Spanish armies before settling in San Antonio, Texas,
and befriending Baron de Bastrop in the early 19th century. Baume married Luisa
Cuturie, and their daughter Victorina married Dr. Alejandro Vidal, with whom she had
two children, Alejandro and Louisa. Louisa married Alphonse Portanery, bearing him
three daughters: Eugenia, Felice J. (1858-1936), and Adele. Felice married Walter
Charles Freeman (1846-1934), with whom she had Etta Adele (1883-1988), John, Walter,
and Will. Etta married and had several children with Thomas Benjamin Martin (d.
1939), including Janette <emph render="doublequote">Jan</emph> Bareiss, Etta, and

			<head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>Consisting of photographs, sheet music, legal documents, memoirs, and printed
material, the Etta Adele Martin Family Papers, [1827?]-1983, chronicle Martin’s life
in San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Houston, and Austin, Texas, as well as the lives of
her ancestors. The memoir notes, 1974-1983, primarily describe late 19th century San
Antonio and the hurricane that struck Corpus Christi in 1919. The collection also
includes legal documents, such as a typed transcript of the Baron de Bastrop's will
and business documents from the Martin, Portanery, and Freeman families’
enterprises. Printed materials include music books belonging to Martin’s grandfather
Alphonse Portanery, literary productions by Etta M. Martin, and other printed
materials relating to the family. Over 125 photographs portray the Martin and
Freeman families as well as their friends and relatives in Galveston, San Antonio,
and North Beach in Corpus Christi. Additionally, an ink and watercolor sketch
				depicts the battleship <emph render="italic">U.S.S. Maine</emph>.</p>
