Biographical Note

Born in Kosse, Texas, Walter Angus Keeling (1873-1945) was the son of B.D. Keeling and Mary Lou Mitchell. Following his high school graduation in 1893, Keeling attended the Sam Houston Normal Institute in Huntsville (now Sam Houston State University), after which he graduated with his bachelor of law degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1897. Admitted to the bar that same year, Keeling established his law practice in Groesbeck, Texas, serving as assistant County Attorney and County Attorney for ten years. In 1912, he became assistant state Attorney General, and was subsequently appointed Assistant Attorney General under C.M. Cureton in 1918. Three years later, Keeling became Attorney General, during which he represented Texas before the United States Supreme Court in boundary disputes with New Mexico and Oklahoma. Following his retirement in 1924, Keeling practiced law in Austin.
