A Guide to the Charles B. Johnson Papers, 1853-1867 (bulk 1859-1865)
Biographical NoteIn the 1850s and 1860s, Charles B. Johnson was a partner with Matthew Grimes in the mercantile firm Johnson and Grimes, based in Fort Smith, Arkansas. In 1862, the Wichita Indian Agency contracted the company to supply them with food and other goods. The same year, Johnson became a quartermaster’s agent for the Confederate Army at Sherman, Texas, in charge of securing provisions for troops and Indians. Johnson Papers, 1853-1867 (bulk 1859-1865), document the career of Johnson as a merchant and quartermaster. The papers concern the business affairs of the firm of Johnson and Grimes and its contract with the Wichita Indian Agency as well s Johnson’s activities as a Confederate quartermaster’s agent at Sherman, Texas. Additionally, letters, primarily between Johnson and his partner Matthew Grimes, discuss business, personal matters, and local and war news.
