The sons of James Hunter (1812-1840) and Mary Myers Smith (1820-1890), Nathaniel Wych Hunter (1839-1905) and Malcolm Kenmore Hunter (1837-1866), were raised in Houston County, Texas. During the Civil War, the brothers enlisted in Company A of the 2nd Texas Cavalry Regiment of the Confederate Army. Malcolm Kenmore Hunter died shortly after the war. In 1865, Nathaniel Wych married Jane Armistead Beeson (1845-1934), with whom he had at least eight children. The couple settled in Palestine, Texas, where he practiced law.

Consisting of Photostats of correspondence, field notes, a survey, a speech, and a poem, the Nathaniel Wych and Malcolm Kenmore Hunter Family Papers, 1860-1877, document the experiences of Hunter brothers during their enlistment in Company A of the 2nd Texas Cavalry Regiment as well as the affairs of the Hunter family. Correspondence discusses battles, morale within the regiment, and camp life. Field notes and a speech pertain to the war and the defense of the Confederacy, while a poem written by an anonymous author for Malcolm Kenmore Hunter laments the death of Albert Sidney Johnson and the battle of Shiloh. Also included is an 1877 survey of San Marcos, Texas.
