Biographical Note

Raised in Hughes Springs, Texas, Howell R. Hughes (1851-1935) was the son of Reece Hughes (1811-1893) and Elizabeth Rose (1826-1853). Born in Bedford County, Tennessee, Reece Hughes moved to East Texas in 1838, where he acquired vast land holdings, slaves, and an iron works. His wife, Elizabeth Rose, was the daughter of William Pinckney Rose (1787-1850), a participant in the Regulator-Moderator War. During the Civil War, Reece Hughes’ opposition to Texas secession caused Confederate authorities to seize much of his property, including his iron works, ruining him financially.
