			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>A native of Grimes County, Texas, William Randolph Howell (b. ca. 1841) served in the 2nd regiment of Henry H. Sibley’s Brigade in the Confederate Army. Following the war, Howell returned to Grimes County, where he served as president of the Ennis National Bank and became the president of the National Bank of Navasota.</p>

			<p>Comprised of a diary, correspondence, and newspaper clippings, the W. Randolph Howell Papers, 1861-1879, document Howell’s enlistment in the 2nd regiment of Henry H. Sibley’s Brigade. Howell’s correspondence and diary describe life within the regiment, travel from Texas to New Mexico, and the battles of Valverde and Glorietta Pass during the Civil War. Additionally, letters also pertain to familial affairs, while newspaper clippings concern the war.</p>
