			<p>John W. Hill was a sergeant in Company D of the 8th Texas Cavalry (better known as
				Terry’s Texas Rangers) in the Confederate Army. His brother Bob also fought for the
				Confederate Army.</p>

			<head>Scope and Contents</head>
			<p>Primarily comprised of original and transcribed correspondence of John W. and Bob
				Hill to their sister Mary Scott Hill, the John W. Hill Papers, 1861-1866, document
				the Hill brothers’ experiences during and immediately following the Civil War. The
				letters describe camp life, illnesses, deaths, battles, as well as troop movements
				in Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee, and other southern states. Correspondence also
				includes letters from and to other family members, including T. A. Hill, D. O. Hill,
				and Mrs. M. E. Brook.</p>
