A Guide to the Augustus M. Hill Papers, 1908
Biographical NotePhysician Augustus M. Hill was the son of Abram Hill, who arrived in Texas in 1835 and settled in Brazos County. During the Civil War, Augustus served for the Confederacy as a private in Company B of the 26th Texas Cavalry, Debray's Regiment. As part of General Nathaniel P. Banks’ Red River Campaign, he fought in the Battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill. Hill Papers, 1908, document the experiences of Hill and fellow veterans of Company B of the 26th Texas Cavalry during General Nathaniel P. Banks’ Red River Campaign. Letters to Hill from L. J. Storey and Captain John L. Lane (1908) and Hill’s reminiscences describe the Battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, which took place in April 1864.
