Native Texan, historian, and Lieutenant Colonel Harry McCorry Henderson retired from the U. S. Army in 1945 after 28 years of infantry service and devoted himself to researching Texas history, particularly military history. He published several books, including History of the 141st Infantry, 36th Infantry Division, Texas National Guard (1950) Colonel Jack Hays, Texas Ranger (1954), Hood’s Texas Brigade (1955), and Texas In The Confederacy (1955). A member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and the Texas Historical Association, Henderson also contributed articles to Southwestern Historical Quarterly.

 Scope and Contents

Comprising correspondence, patents, land titles, commissions, and a speech, the H. M. Henderson Papers, 1804-1903, 1931, document the assignment and exchange of property and political appointments in 19th century Texas and Alabama. Land grants, titles, and patents (1830-1903) pertain to property in Bexar, Anderson, and Presidio County, Texas, including several titles of George Antonio Nixon. The collection also includes a Spanish will for Salvador Rodriquez (1804); a letter of endorsement and an appointment from Alabama governor Robert Miller Patton for Colonel James L. Tait (1868, 1872); and the gubernatorial appointment of Daniel Murphy as sheriff of Reeves County, Texas (1896). Additionally, a 1931 speech commemorates the construction of the Alamo Ditch in San Antonio.
