			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>Born near Austin, Texas, Mattie Alice Austin Hatcher (b. ca. 1880-1956) was the
				daughter of Charles Freeman and Anna Pope Hague Austin and the wife of Maurice S.
				Hatcher. Hatcher graduated with an M.A. in history from the University of Texas in
				1903 and became the university’s first archivist three years later. She wrote and
				edited numerous books and articles on Texas history, including <title
					render="italic">The Opening of Texas to Foreign Settlement, 1801-1821</title>
				(1927) and <title render="italic">Letters of an Early American Traveller, Mary
					Austin Holley: Her Life and Her Works, 1784-1846</title> (1933).</p>

			<p>Correspondence, literary productions, account papers, historical accounts, and
				genealogy of the Mattie Austin Hatcher Papers, 1800-1930, document Hatcher’s
				historical research and archival career at the University of Texas Archives. The
				papers consist of Hatcher’s literary productions, drafts, and bibliography of her
				research; social and career prophesies for the 1914 UT class; correspondence,
				1921-1928; and account papers, 1927-1929. The papers also concern the genealogy of
				the Austin family; a study and notes of the Texas mission system from 1716 to 1827;
				Napoleon I in Mexico, 1800-1811; revolutionary Spanish movement in Texas and Mexico,
				1811-1821; colonization contracts, 1800-1841; and a calendar of the Bexar
				Archives.</p>
