			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>Born in Shelbyville, Texas, Martha Washington Crawford Harpold (1852-1934) was the daughter of William C. and Rhoda (Watkins) Crawford. In 1859, Harpold moved with her family to Pittsburg, Texas, where she worked as postmistress until her marriage to Clay Harpold (1849-1933) in 1876. The couple had five children together, three of whom died in infancy. Traveling widely with her husband, who was employed in the railroad industry, Harpold also worked as an immigration agent and literary writer for the Fort Worth and Albuquerque Railroad. Writing under several pen names, including <emph render="doublequote">Mother Jones,</emph> <emph render="doublequote">M.W. Hardtoil,</emph> and <emph render="doublequote">Irene Halstead,</emph> Harpold was also a contributor to several Texas periodicals and a charter member of the Texas Woman’s Press Association. Irene, Texas, is said to be named in her honor.</p>

			<p>Consisting of newspaper and magazine clippings, the Martha Washington Harpold Scrapbook, 1888-1892, 1934, documents the writing career of Harpold while living in Clarendon, Texas. Articles in the scrapbook discuss life in the Panhandle region, political and social issues affecting women in Texas, book reviews, and the construction of railroads in new cities and regions, among other topics (1888-1892). The scrapbook also contains Harpold’s obituary (1934).</p>
