Biographical Note

Charles T. Harlan (1817?- ) was a bookkeeper from Vicksburg, Mississippi. During the Mexican War, he enrolled as a soldier in the 1st Mississippi Infantry in 1846, rising to the rank of sergeant. In 1849, Harlan traveled to Sacramento, California, during the gold rush. He was not heard from again after 1853.

Scope and Contents

The Charles T. Harlan Papers, 1844-1856, consist of letters from Harlan to Julia Le Grand. The letters concern his service in the Mexican War and his journey from Vicksburg to Sacramento and his desire to make money and return to Vicksburg to marry Julia. An additional 1856 letter to Julia was from her mother. The collection also includes two copies of letter transcriptions.
