A Guide to the Carl Douglas and Alma Catherine Cooper Garner Papers, [ca. 1920s]-2001
Biographical NoteRio Vista, Texas, natives Carl Douglas Garner (1917-1972) and Alma Catherine Cooper (1922-1999) married in 1945, and the couple had five children: Mariann Wizard (1946-), Pamela Taylor, Douglas Garner, Patrick Garner, and Robert Garner. During World War II, Carl served in the Pacific Theatre for the U.S. Navy, while Catherine worked as an inspector for the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation after earning a certificate in Engineering, Science, and Management from the War Training Program of the University of Texas. Following the war, Carl worked as a factory superintendent for the Grubbs and Rutledge Potato Chip companies in Forth Worth. Upon the death of her husband, Catherine returned to Rio Vista, becoming the first female mail carrier for the Cleburne Post Office. During the 1980s and 1990s, she volunteered at the Walls Regional Hospital and was a lay leader for the Rio Vista Methodist Church. Scope and ContentsThe Carl Douglas and Alma Catherine Cooper Garner Papers, [ca. 1920s]-2001, document the personal relationships and careers of the Garner family. The collection is divided based on creator into four series: I. Garner family papers, II. Alma Catherine Cooper Garner papers, III. Carl Douglas Garner papers, and IV. Mariann Garner Wizard papers. The Garner family papers consist of correspondence, military and legal records, printed material, and photographs, which illustrate the marriage of Carl and Catherine Garner as well as their relationships with their children, other family members, and friends from World War II until their deaths. The second series, Alma Catherine Cooper Garner papers consist of correspondence, school records, printed material, certificates, notes, and printed material, concerning her friendships, career as a post office carrier, volunteerism, and association with the Rio Vista Methodist Church. The Carl Douglas Garner papers pertain to Carl’s social and business associations, such as the Lions Club and Civilian Conservation Corps, and include his school records, business card, certificates, and membership cards. Consisting of babybooks, medical records, certificates, and printed material, the Mariann Garner Wizard papers document her youth and education from her birth in 1946 until 1964.
